What to expect

Recovery after childbirth is gradual and differs after vaginal and caesarean birth. Sleep, feeding, pain, bleeding and emotional wellbeing all deserve attention.

Support and follow-up

Early contact and a planned postnatal review can help identify feeding difficulties, infection, mood concerns, blood-pressure problems and recovery needs.

Practical care

Rest, hydration, nutrition, prescribed medicines and support from family or professionals may help. New or worsening symptoms should not be dismissed as simply part of recovery.

When to seek urgent careSevere pain, heavy bleeding, fainting, breathlessness, chest pain, seizures, confusion, high fever or rapidly worsening symptoms require urgent medical assessment.
Medical note: Recommendations can change as new evidence and local protocols evolve. Use the official guideline links for source organisations.
